The Future We Almost Know

Sat, 10 May 2008 16:00:56 PDT
Flying Car When I was young the future was very different from the way it is today. It was spaceships, and jet packs and flying cars. And when I was a bit older it was cybertech and biotech, humanity reinventing itself and making itself stronger, smart, faster and perhaps immortal. The future we received was an odd one. The sheer ubiquity of communication is something not predicted by most of the futurists and sci-fi authors of the pre-eighties world. My generation, Gen-X, as a friend of mi

What the Cumulative NYSE TICK is Telling Us About Market Psychology

Sat, 10 May 2008 16:08:22 PDT
Recall that the NYSE TICK is a measure of very short term sentiment across the broad universe of NYSE issues. When a stock trades at its offer price, that contributes +1 to the NYSE TICK. When a stock trades at its bid price, -1 is added to the TICK. These readings are summed for all NYSE stocks every five seconds. As a result, a TICK reading of +500 means that, at that moment, 500 more stocks are trading at their offer price than at their bid. This means that traders are sufficiently bullish o

Just general busyness and preoccupiedness (Yes, that is a word per the very authoritative "Lydia's English Dictionary"). :) So where to begin... Frugality I have been trying to

Californians' obsession with raw food – and not just sushi – is starting to catch on over here, and cafés, restaurants and food shops are cashing in.

D&G went mad for plaid while dsquared2 mixed in a little bit of the pattern to jazz up the otherwise more tame collection. If you follow the lead of D&G, Etro, Dsquared... you can see that as long as the colors still play nice together, you can layer nearly anything. Mixing pattern on pattern can be done without your photo ending up splatterd on th

Earth, Wind & Fire - Illumination (2005) Link 2 This album is what every family should play at the family reunions, because there is a strong mix of the good ol' EWF flavor that has allowed them to sustain longevity in the game as well as a lot of the newness from the more TALENTED artists of today. On this record, Ralph, Maurice, Phillip and Verdine are joined by guest artists Raphael Saadiq, Sleepy Brown, will.i.am and Brian McKnight. For a group that has released about 3 doz

Google's watching

I've been trying out some different ways of syncing my bookmarks between my home and work computers, which is how I ended up taking a second look at Google Bookmarks today. The page also displayed my Web History, which I had set as limited to my Google search history. Part of what this does is analyze your search trends, including your hourly, daily, and monthly search averages and the most common searches you've performed. It was very strange to see my searching life flash before my eyes, and e

It’s Not What’s For Dinner

The slow death of British culture in the name of multiculturalism continues. For decades the national dish has been a staple meal on the national carrier. But now British Airways has taken beef off the menu for economy passengers amid concerns about its “religious restrictions”. The airline has instead switched to a fish pie or chicken dish option for the so-called “cattle class” passengers. BA’s second-biggest long-haul market is to India, where the majority Hindu population do not ea

Lots More Consequences

It's the thing that many experts still don't understand: how interconnected everything is. That is why they didn't realize that the subprime crisis would have implications for all lending markets. Or that upheaval in one credit trading arena would spread to others. Or that so many different types of financial institutions in various countries around the world would end up with rivers of red ink flowing out of their financial statements. Or, as the following report from the New York Times, "Lo
